It’s not mental, it’s medical. That’s the message behind a new survey detailed recently in an article by The New York Times.

To paraphrase the results of the study as reported in the Times, even though scientific research shows that diet and exercise alone are not sufficient for weight loss, a large majority of survey respondents said that people should be able to to lose weight on their own through willpower!

We know this is not true, and science backs us up.

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), I’ve always believed that people’s weight and fitness levels have to do not only with their DNA … but also with education, mental health, stress levels, hormone levels, and possibly underlying medical conditions, as well. Presuming that all people with weight issues need to “eat less and exercise more” is a truly outdated way of looking at weight loss and wellness.

Sure, there are some people who aren’t informed enough or simply don’t want to take control of their health but in my experience, they are in the minority.  Well over 90% of overweight people have tried to lose weight at one point or another and failed.  Some have even been “on a diet” their entire lives.

Education, mental health, stress, hormones, and medical conditions can be addressed, but you can’t change your genetic make up.

However, this doesn’t mean you are doomed to live out some pre-determined genetic life sentence … far from it! We are still learning so much about genetics and how food choices and environment influence gene expression. 

We do know that, genetically, some people have to work harder, sometimes a lot harder, than others to maintain a normal weight. Often, people carrying excess weight may have legitimate medical conditions that need to be diagnosed and treated. Working with their physicians or therapists, what works for weight loss can vary significantly from one person to the next, including their nutrition and activity programs.

What provides success for one person is not necessarily the right program for someone else. 

According to the Times, respondents said they believe that active dieting and exercise are the most effective ways to shed pounds when, in reality, researchers noted that a self-help approach was ineffective for 94 percent of obese participants, no matter how many times they tried. Does any of this sound familiar? Some of the participants in the study had tried more than 20 times to shed excess weight. 

 

Instead of jumping to derogatory conclusions, we need to show support, compassion, and encouragement.

    Он добавил, что церковь не случайно призывает верующих к совершению этого подвига, потому что без самоочищения “невозможно вступить на путь покаяния, а путь покаяния представляет собой не просто раскаяние человека в каких-то грехах, но он направлен на то, чтобы человек исправил свое поведение”.

    “То есть, если он кого-то обидел, надо по крайней мере попросить прощения, а еще лучше загладить обиду какими-то добрыми делами, добрыми поступками, добрым отношением к человеку”, – сказал Иларион.

    В свою очередь настоятель храма Новомучеников и исповедников Домодедовских протоиерей Максим Колесник в эфире сетевого вещания “Вечерней Москвы” призвал не превращать в формальность хорошую традицию просить прощения. “Важно, с каким намерением вы в этот день обращаетесь к собеседнику, однако сложнее помириться с реальным человеком, который обидел вас. Вспомнить, были ли такие люди, которых мы вольно или невольно оскорбили”, – напутствовал он.

    Напомним, Прощеное воскресенье 10 марта заканчивает масленичную неделю. Главный редактор духовно-просветительского журнала “Православная беседа” Валентин Лебедев подчеркнул, что Прощеное воскресенье – уже не Масленица, а церковный обряд. По его словам, нужно найти силы простить обидчика, а не попросить прощения.

    “Мы понимаем, что простить трудно даже по мелочи. Человек, пребывающий в церкви, обладает этим даром. Прощать надо не человека, а его поступки по отношению к вам: высказывания, мысли. Искренне простить – это сила, не все могут это сделать”, – отметил Лебедев.

    При этом он, сославшись на исследование психологов, привел в пример ситуацию с женщиной, “которую все называют стервой” и которая “не может наладить отношения с мужем”: “ей нужно простить своему отцу то многое зло, что он содеял против нее. Тогда она перестает быть конфликтной и находит свое счастье”.

    После Прощеного воскресенья для верующих начинается Великий пост. В этом году он продлится до 27 апреля, когда православные будут отмечать Пасху. Митрополит Иларион отметил, что Великим постом Церковь раз в год призывает каждого человека к серьезному переосмыслению собственной жизни.

    “Великий пост – это не просто время, когда мы воздерживаемся от той или иной пищи, это прежде всего время, когда мы следим за своими поступками, за своими мыслями, когда мы больше обращаемся к чтению Священного писания, когда мы больше времени уделяем богослужению и молитве, и это тот период, который очень благотворно действует на каждого верующего человека”, – сказал владыка.

    Он добавил, что Великий пост часто называют “духовной весной”, так как “благодаря внутреннему подвигу самоочищения человек нравственно перерождается”.

    Традиция испрашивать прощение перед началом Великого поста существует во всем православном мире и берет свое начало в древних палестинских и египетских монастырях. На время поста монахи уходили в пустыню. “Там их ждал голод, безводие, разбойники: фактически они шли на смерть, поэтому и просили друг у друга прощения, вот откуда это происходит”, – объяснил Лебедев.

    В Прощеное воскресенье за богослужением совершается также “воспоминание Адамова изгнания” – библейского события, положившего, согласно учению Церкви, начало земной истории.
